Bukit Timah Hike Guide

Bukit Timah Hike Guide

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is one of the most special green spaces in Singapore. It holds the highest natural point in the country at about 164 meters and contains one of the last remaining areas of primary rainforest. This place carries rich history, amazing biodiversity, and several interesting trails that make it suitable for both new hikers and regular hikers.

History and heritage
The forest was first protected in 1883 when Nathaniel Cantley recommended the creation of forest reserves. Bukit Timah was later given protection through the Nature Reserves Ordinance in 1951. In 2011 it became an ASEAN Heritage Park. The reserve underwent major restoration from 2014 to 2016 to make the slopes safer and strengthen the trails. It reopened in better condition with reinforced paths and improved forest management.

Nature and wildlife
The reserve contains more than 1,200 plant species along with many birds, butterflies and small mammals. Hikers often notice long-tailed macaques, squirrels and a mix of forest birds. The tall rainforest canopy keeps certain areas cool even on warm days.

Main trails inside the reserve
Visitor Centre to Summit (Route One) is about 1.2 kilometers — the most direct path with a paved climb.
Route Two is about 0.8 kilometers and leads to the Telecomm Tower.
Route Three is about 1.8 kilometers and goes through South View Path and Cave Path, offering more rugged terrain.
Route Four is about 3 kilometers and includes the summit plus a loop toward Dairy Farm.

Nearby connecting trails
Wallace Trail starts from Dairy Farm Nature Park and is about 2.2 kilometers — an easier walk.
Murnane Trail is about 3 kilometers and links to Rifle Range Nature Park.
Scenic Quarries Loop covers about 11 kilometers and passes old granite quarry sites.
